Today ASH was informed by the Applicant’s consultant Cardno that the Applicant had agreed to web publication of ALL the information required to be presented to the public at this time. GO either to the Cardno website www.cardno.com or use the link:

http://www.cardno.com.au/hinchbrook/Preliminary_Information_Form_Part_1_(rev2)_signed.php

Last week the public was denied practical access to the documents published for “public comment” in relation to the Cardwell Shire Council’s Application to the Commonwealth Government for consent to construct a pair of breakwaters projecting into the World Heritage listed Hinchinbrook Passage at Oyster Point. The Hinchinbrook Passage area is the heartland of the Hinchinbrook dugongs and home to other threatened species and an area of great beauty.

The proposed breakwaters are associated with the Cardwell Properties/Keith Williams “Port Hinchinbrook” canal estate and marina.

On 7 th September ASH published a media release (see below) that set out the situation clearly.

As well as agreeing to publish all the documents, Cardno has agreed to:

  • accept submissions after the due date (Friday 15 th September);
  • forward all submissions including late submissions to the Commonwealth Environment Minister;
  • accept submissions by fax and email.

Spokesperson for ASH, Margaret Moorhouse, said “ASH is pleased that Cardno has accepted our argument that matters of World Heritage belong to all Australians, and that world wide web publication of the relevant documents associated with the Application’s Preliminary Information publication on the web is in the public interest. It’s a matter of shame that this outcome was not provided by government processes.”

Submitters may forward their comments to Michael Chessells, Cardno

by fax: 07 3369 9722

or by email: breakwaters.submissions@cardno.com.au.
